Your first visit is approximately 45 minutes to an hour long
with our dentist and a qualified Dental Nurse. During your assessment
we will be spending time finding out how we can best help you.
We will screen you for mouth cancer inside
and outside your mouth; review your teeth, restorations (fillings,
crowns, veneers and bridges) and any dentures you wear. We
will be looking for signs of disease in your teeth, cracks
or broken restorations and area of sensitivity which may indicate
dental problems. We
will then screen your gums for signs of gum disease such as bleeding,
gums coming away from the teeth (pockets) or receding gums. Another
symptom of gum disease and tooth disease is bad breathe and checking
for this is routinely part of your assessment.
The health of your jaw joint
and muscles will be checked and how they work in relation to
how your teeth meet and move over each other. If you are unhappy
with your smile, we will also look at the colour, size, shape
and position of your teeth and will explore the many options
we can provide to enhance your smile.
You will be asked to complete
a medical questionnaire to ensure your safety. If indicated we
will take any clinically necessary radiographs (x-rays). We use
the fasted film available so all our patients benefit from reduced
radiation doses. Your health is our priority.
We shall discuss any treatment
required, give you all the available options and provide a full
written treatment plan together with details of cost and payment
methods. We will recommend optimal treatment, just as we would
for a member of our own family. Not only is it healthier for
you, but we believe that the best dentistry is very precise,
lasts a long time, prevents further break down and feels more
comfortable than compromise treatment. Alternatives are available
and I will pursue them as far as you wish.
To help you understand the
treatment recommended or to show you some possible cosmetic choices,
we have an interactive patient education system on DVD, digital
cameras for inside and outside your mouth and photographs of
cases we have completed.
If you are seeking a second
opinion or have been referred by your dentist for smile improvement
and cosmetic treatments your assessment will be biased towards
your needs. Please tell
us how we can help you and we will tailor make your assessment
visit.
