Are They Expensive?
Costs usually depend on the size and type of white filling used
and the time it takes to complete the treatment. We have fixed
prices for the different sizes of white fillings, these are displayed
in the waiting area. Prices will be discussed and a written estimate
provided when available treatment options are discussed.
Are They As Good As Silver Amalgam Fillings?
In the past white fillings were considered to be less strong
and wear out more quickly than silver amalgam. But there are
now new materials available with properties comparable to silver
amalgam, and these are proving to be very successful. All our
white fillings are placed using the dual bonding system which
glues the filling into place making them extremely strong. The
life expectancy of a white filling can depend greatly on where
it is in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together
when you bite. We can discuss the life expectancy of your fillings
and if white fillings are the best option for you. We can show
you the available options using our DVD system.
Is It Worth Replacing My Amalgam Fillings With White Ones?
It is usually best to change fillings only when we decide that
an old filling needs replacing. If so, you can ask to have it
replaced in a tooth-coloured material.
When a large filling is needed
in a back tooth it may be better to use an inlay (filling custom
made at the laboratory) or a crown. As this involves a technician
and 2 visits this solution is more expensive but may prevent
early fracture of the tooth and on going expense. We will advise
you of the recommended option in each situation.
What Are Tooth-Coloured Fillings Made Of?
This can vary, but they are mainly made of glass particles,
synthetic resin and a setting ingredient.
